Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher

The cliffs, which reach 702 feet (214 metres) at their highest point are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland, visited by over a million tourists each year.

But you can get away from the crowds!

- visit before 9am or after 6pm;

- rather than using the main car park, use the signposted ‘Guerin’s Path to Cliff Walk’ Parking. Park your car, then follow the little path up to the one of the highest points of the cliffs from where you have a full 360° view of the entire area. On a clear day you will be able to spot the Connemara mountains, Aran Islands, Mt. Brandon in Kerry and Liscannor Bay, making this a perfect place to start your Cliffs of Moher walk.

- take the Cliff Walk from Doolin (park in the village), or from Liscannor (another private parking is on the way to Hag's head, the western tip of the Cliffs). Use Caution, stay on the track, do not venture towards the edges as they are not safe - even on a dry day. People are regularly risking their lifes in search for the best Instagram picture! Approaching the main visitor area (paved) you'll probably be asked for an entrance fee, as the local council is trying to get everybody to pay, no matter if you use the facilities in the visitor centre or not. But either way, coming from Doolin or Liscannor, you can just stay on the "free" part and enjoy the views. You don’t have to worry about walking all the way back – you can take the Cliffs of Moher shuttle bus, which launched in 2019. The bus runs 8 times daily from June to August. Be aware, parts of the Cliff Walk might be closed for repairs at times, and the bus operation is limited. So, please check locally before starting the walk and for bus schedules.

- take a boat from Doolin and enjoy the spectacular sight from the sea;

- last not least, there's an alternative less than an hour to the south: the Kilkee Cliffs might not reach the height of the Moher Cliffs, but many visitors praise them as the 'better cliffs', especially on a day with high waves. There's a free paved walking path along the Kilkee Cliffs, together with free parking and a café, with great views of Kilkee Bay.
